Special Message from Board of Education President Richard Barsa

On Monday August 6th, Dr. Zywicki was appointed as the Superintendent of Schools for the Mount Olive School District. In the evening of August 7th, the Weehawken Board of Education met and accepted with regret Dr. Zywicki’s resignation effective October 9, 2018. On behalf of myself and the Board, I want to thank Dr. Zywicki for the tremendous innovation that he brought to the District. He instituted a variety of programs including 1:1 Chromebooks, robotics and coding at Webster School, expanded instrumental music at Roosevelt School, and AP Capstone at the High School. These enhancements will positively impact Weehawken for years to come. Under Dr. Zywicki’s leadership, the district moved from great to excellent. We are now recognized as one of the most innovative and future ready districts in the nation. For two years in a row, Weehawken has been ranked as one of the top 100 districts in New Jersey and the top district in Hudson County. Additionally, Weehawken High School is now ranked in the top 50 in the state by U.S. News. We are very sad to see Dr. Zywicki leave, but we wish him well in his new position that is a much shorter commute from his home and family.

In order to ensure continuity and that the progress continues, the Board immediately began working to find an experienced interim superintendent. I am happy to report that last evening the Board appointed Dr. Terrance R. Brennan to be the interim superintendent of schools starting in October. Dr. Brennan has twenty years of superintendent and interim superintendent experience notably at Pompton Lakes, Middlesex Boro, and High Point Regional. Dr. Brennan’s extensive experience as a superintendent and positive track record of ensuring stability and growth in the districts where he served as an interim superintendent were key qualifications in his selection. Dr. Brennan earned his doctorate and two master’s degrees from Columbia University. He is a graduate professor at Saint Peter’s University. Additionally, he has been a mentor to several successful superintendents including Dr. Zywicki. Dr. Brennan is familiar with Weehawken and visited the District two years ago to see some of our blended learning programs. Dr. Zywicki has pledged to work very closely with Dr. Brennan in the coming weeks to update him on all of our initiatives and to ensure a seamless transition.

While Dr. Brennan is serving as interim superintendent, the Board will begin the process to find a permanent superintendent. As we did when we hired Dr. Zywicki, the board will hire a firm to conduct a nationwide search to recruit and hire the most qualified and experienced permanent replacement possible for Dr. Zywicki.

I ask that you join me in wishing Dr. Zywicki the best in his future endeavors and welcome Dr. Brennan to the Weehawken family.
